Body of officer found in Carnoustie's Barry Burn

The body of a Scottish police officer was discovered Sunday in the Barry Burn, the famed body of water that cuts across Carnoustie Golf Links.

According to a Telegraph (U.K.) report, the body of Dean Morrison was discovered at around 12:40 p.m. Sunday near the Carnoustie Golf Hotel after a three-hour search. Morrison was reportedly an officer with the Tayside Police for the past 16 years.

While foul play is not suspected, authorities are hoping to speak with the taxi driver who picked Morrison up at 11:13 p.m. Saturday before dropping him off in Carnoustie.

“Dean was a highly respected officer, who was extremely well-liked and popular with his colleagues. He was thoroughly professional in his work,” said Tayside divisional commander Andrew Todd. “His death is a great tragedy and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him, and we will do all we can to support them during this distressing time.”

Carnoustie hosted The Open for the eighth time this summer, where Francesco Molinari rallied to win the claret jug. The Barry Burn is one of its most notable landmarks and was the site of Jean Van de Velde’s 72nd-hole collapse in 1999.
