Day beats Noren on sixth playoff hole for Farmers win

After waiting all night, Jason Day wasted little time in securing an overtime victory at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Day and Alex Noren remained deadlocked after five extra holes Sunday when darkness halted play, resulting in a Monday finish at Torrey Pines. The playoff only lasted one additional hole, as Noren’s 250-yard approach to No. 18 hit into a hill and rolled back into a greenside hazard.

That opened the door for Day, whose tee shot found the right rough. After a layup, the Aussie wedged to within 2 feet to set up an easy birdie. Noren, who had a 40-yard pitch for his fourth shot, ultimately made bogey.

It’s the 11th career Tour victory for Day, who also won in a playoff at Torrey Pines at 2015. After a back injury led him to withdraw from the Wednesday pro-am, he is leaving San Diego with his first trophy since winning the 2016 Players Championship as world No. 1.

“It’s been a long time coming. I know that last year wasn’t the geratest season for me,” Day said. “It’s special because I worked very hard in the off-season to try to get back to this position.”

Noren’s T-2 finish alongside Ryan Palmer, who was eliminated on the first extra hole, marks his best career result on the PGA Tour.
