Former PGA champ Yang gets first win since 2010

Former major champ Y.E. Yang won The Crowns on the Japan Golf Tour for his first worldwide victory in nearly eight years.

Yang, who won the 2009 Honda Classic and held off Tiger Woods to win the PGA Championship at Hazeltine that summer, finished four shots ahead of Anthony Quayle and Jung-Gon Hwang after four straight rounds of 3-under 67 at Nagoya Golf Club. It marked his first win anywhere since the Kolon Korea Open in October 2010.

Yang, 46, has played primarily on the European Tour in recent years. He has not made the PGA Tour’s postseason since 2011, and last season he missed five of nine cuts while playing off past champion status. He has not teed it up in the U.S. since missing the cut at the Wyndham Championship in August.

Having dropped to No. 925 in the latest world rankings, Yang had made only two worldwide starts this year before breaking back into the winner’s circle. He finished T-38 at the Asian Tour’s New Zealand Open in March and missed the cut two weeks ago at the Homemate Cup in Japan.

Yang’s last worldwide top-10 finish came almost exactly a year ago, when he tied for sixth at the European Tour’s Volvo China Open.
