Garcia breaks putter, sinks birdie putt with 3-wood

NORTON, Mass. – Sergio Garcia isn’t the first PGA Tour player to take his frustrations out on his putter, but he’s certainly one of the few to actually putt better with a makeshift replacement.

On the fourth hole on Sunday at the Dell Technologies Championship, the Spaniard’s drive at the par 4 was just off the green and 35 feet from the hole. After leaving his eagle putt 13 feet short, Garcia slammed his putter into the ground and damaged it.

Using a 3-wood for his next putt, Garcia rolled in the birdie attempt.

Things didn’t go his way when he switched to a driver at the ninth hole and three-putted from 21 feet for bogey, hitting a putt just 6 inches from about a foot and a half. He later switched to a long iron with some success, holing birdie putts of 12 and 8 feet at the 13th and 17th holes, respectively.

Garcia, who declined to speak with the media after his round, finished the day with 33 putts during a 4-over 75 that dropped him to 2 over par for the week.
