IOC approves golf for 2024 Olympics in Paris

In June the executive board of the International Olympic Committee recommended golf, as well as the other 27 sports from last year’s Summer Games, be included in the program for the 2024 Games, and on Friday the lineup was approved at the 130th IOC session.

Golf returned to the Olympics for the first time in over 100 years in 2016 in Rio and was also approved to be part of the 2020 Games’ program.

“It’s puts the icing on the cake. We had a great Games and proved that golf has a place in the Olympics,” said Antony Scanlon, the executive director of the International Golf Federation, which oversees golf in the Olympics.

“Anecdotally, to those I’ve spoken to here [in Peru] they are very pleased with the competition and the way the athletes embraced the Olympics. The positive messaging from [gold medalists] Justin Rose and Inbee Park, it was all very positive.”

On Wednesday, the IOC announced that Paris will host the 2024 Games and Los Angeles the ’28 Games. The program for the ’28 Games won’t be finalized until after the ’20 Olympics in Tokyo.
