Manager: Matsuyama not hurt, just tired

ATLANTA – Despite reports that he’s been slowed in recent weeks by a hip injury, Hideki Matsuyama isn’t dealing with anything that a little rest can’t cure.

According to Matsuyama’s manager/interpreter Bob Turner, the world’s third-ranked player is simply tired after a long season and his ailment is nothing major.

Matsuyama’s upcoming schedule would seem to be a testament to that, with the Japanese star scheduled to play next week’s Presidents Cup and the WGC-HSBC Champions, where he is the defending champion, next month along with the Hero World Challenge in December.

Turner also said Matsuyama is considering to play the new CJ Cup next month in South Korea and CIMB Classic, along with possible starts on the Japan Golf Tour to finish the year.

Current FedExCup Playoff points standings

The speculation that Matsuyama was injured has been fueled by his poor play this post-season. Although he entered the playoffs ranked first on the regular-season points list, he missed the cut at The Northern Trust, tied for 23th at the Dell Technologies Championship and was 47th last week at the BMW Championship.

He’s currently tied for 25th at the Tour Championship, a 30-man event, and is projected 11th on the final points list. Just once in the playoff era (in 2008 when Tiger Woods missed the post-season with an injury) has the regular-season points leader finished outside the top 10 on the final list.
