McIlroy to play British Masters, then Dunhill Links

After failing to qualify for the Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy has added another start to his upcoming schedule.

McIlroy has signed up for next week’s British Masters on the European Tour, an event hosted by one of his longtime friends, Lee Westwood.

Battling a rib injury for all of 2017, McIlroy said at the PGA Championship that he was considering shutting it down for the rest of the year. Instead, because of “outside expectations,” he played the first three playoff events, and now will tee it up at the British Masters and the Dunhill Links (with his father, Gerry) in consecutive weeks.

After that, he won’t pick up a club for six weeks to allow his injured rib to heal, then turn his attention to getting prepared for the start of 2018.

“Teeing it up next week gives me one more chance to end 2017 on a high,” McIlroy said in a release. “If I can sign off the year with a win or two in Newcastle and then St. Andrews, I would take so many positives into my six-week recovery period when I am going to reset mentally and physically and concentrate on getting myself in the right shape for next year.”

McIlroy, down to No. 8 in the world ranking, has won at least once every year since 2008.
