Reed moves inside Ryder Cup bubble after Valspar

With a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship, Patrick Reed took a big step toward ensuring he’ll be around to shush the Parisian crowds this fall at the Ryder Cup.

Reed bogeyed the final hole to fall one shot short of a playoff with Paul Casey, but it still marked his best result since a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship in August. It also helped him move from 13th to eighth in the U.S. Ryder Cup points race.

Tiger Woods, who tied for second alongside Reed, went from 76th to 31st in the standings.

Players earn one point per dollar in tournaments this year, with 1.5 points per dollar in majors and two points per dollar to winners of majors. The top eight U.S. players after the PGA Championship will qualify automatically for Paris, with captain Jim Furyk rounding out the roster with four picks in September.

Here’s a look at the current U.S. standings:

1. Justin Thomas

2. Dustin Johnson

3. Brooks Koepka

4. Phil Mickelson

5. Jordan Spieth

6. Matt Kuchar

7. Brian Harman

8. Patrick Reed

9. Gary Woodland

10. Rickie Fowler

11. Bubba Watson

12. Chez Reavie

Here’s a look at the European side at the moment, with Casey’s win another boost for the home squad considering his plans to return to the Ryder Cup after renouncing his European Tour membership a few years ago. The European team will be decided off of two lists, with the top four players from the European Points qualifying along with the top four via World Points. Thomas Bjorn will then add four captain’s picks. Here’s a look at the current European standings:

European Points (top 4 qualify)

1. Tyrrell Hatton

2. Justin Rose

3. Ross Fisher

4. Matthew Fitzpatrick

World Points (next 4 qualify)

1. Jon Rahm

2. Tommy Fleetwood

3. Sergio Garcia

4. Rafael Cabrera-Bello
