HUMBLE, Texas – The Houston Open is only halfway over, but Jordan Spieth already has found cause for celebration.
Spieth entered the week as the top-ranked player in the field at the Golf Club of Houston, and in the middle of his second round he certainly played like it. Following a 4-under 68 in the opening round, Spieth went on a birdie tear of five in six holes from Nos. 9-14 to at one point move within a shot of the lead.
While a three-putt bogey dropped him two shots behind fellow Longhorn Beau Hossler, it was his only bogey during a 5-under 67. Spieth spoke earlier in the week about hoping for one low round before heading to the Masters, so he’s rather pleased to already have two under his belt.
“From where I was three days ago, goal accomplished for the week already. And it’s Friday,” Spieth said. “So at this point anything else is icing on the cake. It’s kind of weird to say that, but just trying to take a step forward every single day. I thought today was a step forward from yesterday.”

Spieth still has a few items on his checklist heading into the weekend, including honing his consistency off the tee on a course where you can often get away with minor errors. But after memorably losing to J.B. Holmes here in a playoff one week before slipping into a green jacket back in 2015, he’s content with his position at the halfway point and another shot to win an event in his home state.
“It’s a round that could have been really special, but I don’t have to have an 8- or 9-under round,” Spieth said. “I feel like my game’s in form, and that’s really cool. I’m having a lot of fun out there.”
