Spieth peaking this week is all part of 'the plan'

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Jordan Spieth never sounded as concerned as everyone else over his form coming to the Masters this week, and he showed why taking early control at Augusta National.

With a 6-under-par 66 Thursday, Spieth claimed took a two-shot lead.

He made five birdies in a row before bogeying the 18th.

“I talk about this almost every interview I do,” Spieth said. “We build plans for the year, to peak at certain times. I believe, not just here at Augusta National, but major championships going back a number of years, I play very well. I think that goes back to the work of our team.”

Spieth, 24, had as many missed cuts coming to the Masters this calendar year (2) as he did top 10s, but there’s something about Augusta National that brings out his best. He has been a factor in all four of the Masters he has played, with a win, two T-2s and a T-11. He does carry the memory of a back-nine collapse here two years ago, when he was in control on Sunday before hitting two balls in the water and making a quadruple-bogey at the 12th.

In the 17 rounds Spieth has played in the Masters, he has led in nine of them.

Spieth was asked how the good and bad memories play on him here.

“Whether it’s tomorrow or Saturday or Sunday, I’ll always have demons out here, but I’ll always have a tremendous amount of confidence out there,” he said. “Once you’ve won here, you have a tremendous advantage.”
