Spots in The Open mean added pressure on Sunday

POTOMAC, Md. – Sunday’s contenders at the Quicken Loans National will by vying for more than a PGA Tour title.

The leading four players who finish inside the top 12 on Sunday will receive invitations to The Open at Carnoustie via the Open Qualifying Series, assuming they aren’t already qualified.

Most of this leaderboard isn’t.

Only 19 of the 120 players who showed up this week are exempt into the year’s third major, and four of them – Ben An, Beau Hossler, Kevin Na, and Charles Howell III – were added to the field a day ago, along with Chez Reavie.

Of the fifteen players tied for 10th or better through three rounds, just four of them are already in the Open field: Francesco Molinari (T-1), Hossler (T-7), Tiger Woods (T-10) and Marc Leishman (T-10).

That means guys like Abraham Ancer, Zac Blair, Ryan Armour and a host of others will have something extra to think about down the stretch on Sunday.

A win would take care of everything, but worrying about what might happen might not be a help, as Zac Blair pointed out.

“Just kind of, you know, hopefully just go out and do the right stuff and it just turns out [in your favor],” he said.
