Stenson closes strong Friday to get within four

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Things weren’t going well for Henrik Stenson on Friday at the Masters.

Through 13 holes he was even par, with three bogeys and as many birdies, and had faded seven strokes off the lead held by Patrick Reed.

“It’s hard just staying patient normally but I was getting a little upset with myself not hitting the shots that I wanted,” Stenson said. “I guess I gave myself a little kick in the butt there on 14 and that seemed to help because I finished with a couple of birdies coming in.”

The Swede converted a 35-footer for birdie at No. 14 and added a 25-footer at the 17th hole to finish with a 2-under 70 which moved him into third place at 5 under par.

It was a particularly encouraging rebound for Stenson, whose best finish at Augusta National in 12 starts is a tie for 14th place in 2014. He may need a similar pep talk on Saturday, when the forecast calls for afternoon rain and winds up to 20 mph.

“It could be a grind tomorrow, tough weather conditions forecasted and this golf course is not going to give you any more margins just because the weather is bad,” he said. “Hopefully the game plan we have and the knowledge we have can make us stay in the ball game.”
