Stenson's rented home in Southport burglarized

Updated at 4:26 p.m. ET

SOUTHPORT, England – Henrik Stenson was still at Royal Birkdale getting treatment on Thursday afternoon when he learned that the house he and his family were renting this week had been robbed.

“I was happy that my family wasn’t there,” he said Friday, “and maybe a little disappointed I wasn’t.”

Instead of a laidback afternoon following an opening-round 69, the defending champion said he spent four “semi-chaotic” hours with police at the house.

Merseyside Police released a statement about the burglary on Friday afternoon, with the detective inspector saying that they are “determined to identify those responsible.”

Police said that cash, credit cards, clothes and watches were stolen from Stenson’s rental house. Stenson said he washed his dirty clothes from the week and was also provided more apparel from his sponsor, Boss.

“Actually, they missed my carry-on,” he said, “so I still have my stuff. If they’re listening, they didn’t get the full jackpot.”

Stenson said that he clearly was targeted, since the burglar knew the house was empty while he was playing his opening round.

“Normally, I don’t think burglars would take clothes,” he said. “That doesn’t feel like the normal kind of thing that you would take. But all my gear is gone. If you see people Bossed up, feel free to ask what they were doing between 12 and 4 yesterday.”
