Playing in the first foursomes match, Mel Reid hit the opening tee shot of the competition and nearly drove the green on the short par-4 first. Thompson then did her better, running her 3-wood tee shot onto the putting surface.
Thompson’s playing partner Cristie Kerr converted the 10-foot eagle putt to give the U.S. an immediate 1-up lead.
