Watson nearly cements Ryder Cup spot with WGC win

After his second win in the last five weeks, Bubba Watson can probably start practicing his French.

Watson cruised to victory at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, his second win of the season following his earlier triumph at the Genesis Open. After starting the year seemingly off the Ryder Cup radar, Watson jumped from 11th to third in the U.S. points race following his win in Austin, all but guaranteeing him a spot on the team in Paris this fall.

Watson played on three straight Ryder Cup teams from 2010-14 but notably was left off the team two years ago at Hazeltine, despite being ranked in the top 10 in the world. He instead served as an assistant to captain Davis Love III.

Here’s a look at the U.S. standings heading into the Houston Open, with the top eight players after the PGA Championship earning automatic spots:

1. Justin Thomas

2. Dustin Johnson

3. Bubba Watson

4. Brooks Koepka

5. Phil Mickelson

6. Jordan Spieth

7. Matt Kuchar

8. Brian Harman

9. Patrick Reed

10. Gary Woodland

11. Rickie Fowler

12. Kevin Kisner

27. Tiger Woods

And here’s a look at the latest European standings, where the top four from both the European Points and World Points lists will qualify automatically and join four picks from captain Thomas Bjorn on the home team roster:

European Points

1. Tyrrell Hatton

2. Justin Rose

3. Ross Fisher

4. Matthew Fitzpatrick

World Points

1. Jon Rahm

2. Tommy Fleetwood

3. Rory McIlroy

4. Sergio Garcia
