Woods to only play Quicken before heading to Open

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – As expected, Tiger Woods will make only one more start before the year’s next major.

After missing the cut at the U.S. Open, Woods confirmed Friday that he will only play his event, the Quicken Loans National, before heading overseas for The Open Championship. That rules out the Travelers Championship, Irish Open, Greenbrier Classic and Scottish Open as some of his other potential appearances before The Open.

Woods stated at The Players that one of his goals is to play the final WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, where he has won a record eight times. But to get there, he needs to crack the top 50 in the Official World Ranking by the end of July. He entered the U.S. Open ranked 80th.

That means Woods has only two more scheduled starts before that deadline, unless he adds the RBC Canadian Open (the week after The Open), an event he hasn’t played since 2001.

Woods has never played at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, the host site for the Quicken Loans, the tournament that benefits his foundation.
