HONOLULU – Colt Knost is hardly the first player to be sidelined with an injury, but he may deserve distinction for making the most of his time on the disabled list.
Knost returned to the PGA Tour in October at the season-opening Safeway Open after missing 10 months with a left wrist injury that required surgery in February.
In between doctor’s visits and rehabilitation, Knost explained on Thursday at the Sony Open that he checked a few items off his bucket list.
“It was awesome, I went to the Kentucky Derby and Indianapolis 500,” he said. “I didn’t have a club in my hand for three, four months and went out and did a lot of things I’d never done before and it was a lot of fun.”

That’s not to say Knost isn’t excited to be back at work, particularly after an opening-round 68 at Waialae Country Club. Although he said he experienced some pain earlier this week in his thumb, a cortisone shot last month has allowed him to practice and play with confidence.
“It’s been great,” he said. “Honestly, I’ve had zero pain until Tuesday. I caught a little pinch, but today it held up good. I’ve been practicing pretty hard at home for the last month or so, and maybe I’ve over-done it, but I’m encouraged.”
Knost said if the pain continues, he may have to have another surgery to reconstruct the thumb ligament, but he’s hopeful he can avoid another procedure.
“For the first round, to come out today and hit it the way I did, I was really happy,” Knost said.
