Final Prez Cup spot TBD in final qualifying event

The race to represent the U.S. at next month’s Presidents Cup will go down to the wire.

This week’s Dell Technologies Championship represents the final chance for players to earn one of 10 automatic qualifying spots on captain Steve Stricker’s squad. While most of those spots have been clinched for weeks, the 10th and final position remains very much up for grabs between Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell.

Chappell entered last week at No. 11, and his T-6 finish at The Northern Trust cut into Hoffman’s lead. But Hoffman put up a respectable T-17 finish himself, and his 4,349-point total is still 23 points better than Chappell’s.

With one FedExCup point equal to two Presidents Cup points – and a nearly 400-point gap between Chappell and No. 12 Brian Harman – it’s likely whoever finishes higher at TPC Boston between Hoffman and Chappell will make the team.

Stricker will round out the 12-man squad with a pair of captain’s picks on Sept. 6. Here’s a look at how the U.S. team is shaping up heading into the final qualifying event:

1. Dustin Johnson

2. Jordan Spieth

3. Justin Thomas

4. Daniel Berger

5. Rickie Fowler

6. Brooks Koepka

7. Kevin Kisner

8. Matt Kuchar

9. Patrick Reed

10. Charley Hoffman

11. Kevin Chappell

12. Brian Harman

13. Jason Dufner

14. Gary Woodland

15. Brandt Snedeker

On the International side, Jhonattan Vegas clinched his spot at Liberty National thanks to a T-3 finish last week. Here’s a look at how that squad looks entering the final qualifying week, with spots determined by Official World Golf Ranking and captain Nick Price adding two selections next week:

1. Hideki Matsuyama

2. Jason Day

3. Adam Scott

4. Louis Oosthuizen

5. Charl Schwartzel

6. Marc Leishman

7. Branden Grace

8. Jhonattan Vegas

11. Hideto Tanihara

12. Emiliano Grillo

13. Yuta Ikeda

14. Haotong Li

15. Byeong-Hun An
