Finau excited to be in contention despite ankle

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Considering everything that’s transpired over the last two days, Tony Finau’s second-round 74 at Augusta National was more encouraging than one might think.

Finau wasn’t even sure he would play the Masters after he suffered a high ankle sprain while playing the Par 3 Contest on Wednesday.

“I feel pretty good, especially what I’ve been through just the last 48 hours, with my body and with my ankle,” Finau said. “Emotionally it’s been a roller coaster for me, so to be in this position, you never know what’s going to be leading after a day like today, but I’m going to be in the hunt and going into the weekend and I’m excited about that at a major championship.”

Finau followed his opening-round 68 with a card that included three bogeys and a birdie at the last to finish at 2 under for 36 holes and tied for seventh place.

Finau said his ankle felt better on Friday and that he was able to transfer his weight better on Day 2. He also explained that he and swing coach Boyd Summerhays had to create a workaround for his swing to accommodate his injury.

“We got out on the range quite a bit early yesterday, a couple hours early, and just messed around with it,” Finau said. “When I knew I wanted to play, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to make the regular swing that I could, so we had to adapt and he definitely helped with that.”
