Is this the last Masters for O'Meara, Singh?

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The hardest thing to do is know when the time is right to walk away.

That’s particularly true for the likes of Vijay Singh and Mark O’Meara, a pair of World Golf Hall of Fame players with multiple majors.

This is Singh’s 25th start at the Masters and O’Meara’s 34th. Although the exemption for past champions is for a lifetime, both may be on the brink of a swan song.

Although Singh, 55, opened with a 1-under 71 on Thursday, he told CNN two weeks ago that this could be his last start at the year’s first major. That might change depending on how the rest of the week goes. The Fijian declined to speak with the media after his round.

For O’Meara, 61, who opened with a 78, it seems more likely he will make his final trip around Augusta National on Friday.

“This might be my last,” said O’Meara, who won his green jacket two decades ago. “Three years ago I was tied for 22nd, and my wife said, ‘You were T-3 with the most birdies.’ But I realize this is a big course and when the kids are hitting it 320 I don’t want to shoot 77, 78. I’ll always adore this tournament.”

O’Meara has finished in the top 25 at the Masters 11 times and has made the cut 19 times.
