Brendan Steele reached a new career high in the Official World Golf Ranking after successfully defending his title at the Safeway Open.
Steele birdied the final hole to secure a two-shot victory over Tony Finau in Napa, the third win of his career. It also lifted him 12 spots in the latest rankings to No. 47, the first time Steele has been inside the top 50.
Finau jumped from No. 49 to No. 43 with his runner-up, while Chesson Hadley moved up 15 spots to No. 112 with a tie for third. Phil Mickelson, who tied with Hadley three shots behind Steele, went from 30th to 29th.
Steele wasn’t the only player to go back-to-back on Sunday, as Tyrrell Hatton successfully defended his title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The win helped the Englishman jump seven spots to No. 22, while runner-up Ross Fisher moved up 10 spots to No. 45 after breaking the course record with a final-round 61 on the Old Course at St. Andrews.
The only change among the top 10 came at No. 10, where Brooks Koepka moved past Sergio Garcia despite an off week for both players. Dustin Johnson remains world No. 1, followed by Jordan Spieth, HIdeki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm. Rory McIlroy is No. 6 for another week, with Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, Jason Day and Koepka rounding out the top 10.
Out since February but back to hitting full iron shots as of this weekend, Tiger Woods dropped seven spots to No. 1155 in the latest rankings.
