Another win, another unprecedented height reached by Justin Thomas.
Thomas’ title at the Dell Technologies Championship was his fifth of the season, his first ever in a playoff event, and it seemingly strengthened his grip on the Player of the Year title. It also took the 24-year-old to No. 4 in the latest world rankings, his best-ever position and up two spots from last week.
Thomas was ranked No. 35 prior to his win at the CIMB Classic in October, and he was 14th in the world before winning his first major at the PGA Championship last month.
Other notable moves over the holiday weekend included Marc Leishman jumping seven spots to No. 23 despite losing his lead down the stretch and finishing third at TPC Boston. A T-6 finish bumped Patrick Reed from No. 21 to No. 19, while the same result lifted Phil Mickelson three spots to No. 29.
Adam Hadwin’s T-13 finish helped him jump five spots to No. 45, securing the final automatic spot on the International Presidents Cup team ahead of world No. 54 Emiliano Grillo.
Dustin Johnson remains world No. 1 for another week, followed by Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama and Thomas. Jon Rahm sits at No. 5, meaning that the top five players in the world rankings also occupy the top five spots in the FedExCup race heading into the 70-man BMW Championship.
Rory McIlroy fell two spots to No. 6, marking the first time the Ulsterman has been outside the OWGR top 5 since before he won The Open in 2014. Henrik Stenson jumped one spot to No. 7, with Sergio Garcia, Jason Day and Rickie Fowler rounding out the top 10.
Still idle since February because of a back injury but now medically cleared to return to hitting pitch shots, Tiger Woods fell nine more spots to No. 1130 in the latest rankings.
