Trendsetter Wie dealing with arthritic wrists

PHOENIX – Michelle Wie may be playing with a pair of arthritic wrists, but it didn’t stop her from sparking a run of players ending victory droughts.

That’s what she appeared to do with her victory at the HSBC Women’s World Championship two weeks ago.

After she ended her four-year winless spell with a victory in Singapore, Phil Mickelson won the WGC-Mexico Championship the same day, ending his five-year victory drought. Last weekend, Paul Casey ended a nine-year drought on the PGA Tour.

“I hope I opened the floodgates,” Wie cracked.

About those arthritic wrists, Wie will play with a brace on her left hand this week. She has been getting a series of collagen injections in both wrists that she hopes will alleviate the deteriorating effects arthritis can have. She had a treatment last week and took almost a full week off afterward, without hitting balls. She began hitting balls again this past Sunday.

“I’ve been getting cortisone over the last couple years, and I am now at the point where I can’t get any more cortisone in those areas,” Wie said. “So I found my doctors in New York, and we’ve been doing this more natural injection, more of a collagen injection, trying to recreate some cartilage, more space in my joints. It’s been really helping.

“I get maintenance every three or four months, hopefully, [it will become] longer than that. After that, I play pretty much without any pain.”
