Watson trying to conserve energy before Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. – After Bubba Watson survived a marathon week at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, he’s focusing most of his preparation away from the course this week at the Masters.

He’s focusing on his recovery.

Watson said he quizzed Phil Mickelson about the best practices for allowing his body to recover from a stressful round.

“Mentally, physically, you’re going to be exhausted,” he said. “So do you recover form that before the next round? You’ve got to figure out ways to do that.”

And for Watson, that means less golf. He played only nine holes Monday, and he’s planning to do the same Tuesday. On Wednesday, on the eve of the tournament, he’ll only play the Par 3 Contest.

That’s a departure from when he won his two Masters title, in 2012 and ’14, but he’s 39 now and coming off a long week at the Match Play. He needs to conserve his energy.

Watson has a bizarre record at this event. In nine career starts, he has the two green jackets, of course, but he doesn’t have another finish inside the top 20.

“It’s golf,” he said. “I don’t know if you’ve ever played the game of golf, but it’s very difficult to do it every day perfectly. The way I play golf, sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad.”
